You probably don’t want to hear this, but it’s only a matter of time before winter is here. Unfortunately, these amazing summer months will come to an end. So, to prepare, we’ve put together some helpful tips to get you ready for the colder months that are ahead.
Think of these like Spring Cleaning, just for the Fall. We’re calling them our Fall Freshen Up Tips.
Check Your Furnace
Don’t wait until you need to turn on the furnace to make sure it’s working in tip top shape. Even if you have a newer system, you never want to take chances with cold weather, especially here in the northeast. You should also replace the air filter.
How often to change your air filters can depend on the following:
- What type of air filter you use
- Indoor air quality
- Amount of pets in the home
- The number of people living in the home
- The level of air pollution in your area
For basic 1–3″ air filters, manufacturers usually suggest that you to change them every 30–60 days. If someone in the household suffers from allergies, you might want to upgrade the air filter or change it more often.
Prepare for Power Outages
The possibility of power outages in real no matter where you live. When you consider how much more likely blizzards are for WNY and CNY, you really have to be prepared to be without power for an extended period of time. You should:
- Make sure you have several flashlights with fresh batteries
- Stock up on canned goods and bottled water
- Have some candles ready
- Have a portable power bank to change your phone
- Make sure you have plenty of extra blankets
- Consider investing in a generator
Check Your Smoke Detectors
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year.
Check Windows & Doors for Air Leaks
Similar to checking your furnace, don’t wait until the cold air is coming into the house to rectify any gaps in your windows and doors. Get some door draft guards and seal up the windows in preparation of the cold months. This will keep your family warm and also save you on your heating costs.
Shop Gas & Electric Rates
The utility company is there to safely deliver electric and gas to your home. Where you get that energy is up to you. An Energy Service Company, or ESCO like EnergyMark can help you save money on your gas and electric rates and even help you make sure that you’re purchasing responsibly sourced renewable energy.
