What is an ESCO: How Energy Suppliers Work

April 7, 2025

While EnergyMark is an energy supplier for commercial businesses, large and small, that’s not the whole story. EnergyMark is not a utility company; instead, we’re what’s known as an ESCO.

The term “ESCO” stands for energy service company; for commercial businesses, partnering with an ESCO introduces unique advantages that utility companies simply can’t provide.

ESCO’s: What Is an Energy Service Company?

ESCOs or energy service companies perform a variety of services for commercial clients, all of which can help them save money on energy. This end goal is achieved through the management of clients’ energy usage, consulting with clients to help them mitigate financial risks, stabilize their energy rates, capitalize on current renewable-energy incentives, and more.

It doesn’t end at consultation: the main way that ESCOs help businesses protect their bottom line from high energy costs is through energy supply. No matter the scale of a business, ESCOs like EnergyMark serve as cost-effective commercial gas and electricity suppliers.

Energy service companies buy gas and electricity from wholesale markets, selling it to their customers at a reduced rate using the same distribution system as the utility company does.

Energy service companies also provide auditing services, assessing the energy use, costs, and efficiency of a business in order to determine how those factors could be improved in the interest of saving money.

What is a Utility Company?

Compared to an ESCO, a utility company offers different services, but that’s because they exist to fulfill businesses’ and residences’ basic needs for energy.

Utility companies are also responsible for maintaining the energy grid. They repair downed power lines, restore power to homes and businesses in the event of an outage, and fix gas leaks.

ESCO’s vs Utility Companies: Understanding the Difference

Despite some overlap, ESCOs and utility companies both exist for distinct reasons and have different priorities. To understand the difference, it’s important to know the difference between energy supply and energy delivery.

Energy delivery includes the cost of transporting the energy to homes and businesses through mediums like powerlines and pipes and is always provided by the local utility company. Energy supply is what ESCOs provide, and that only concerns the cost of the energy used by the client.

Utility companies exist to fulfill the basic need of delivering energy for businesses and residences. If an energy user has not selected an ESCO to provide their energy supply to them, then the utility also will provide the default energy supply.

Utility companies also maintain the power grid and perform a range of tasks necessary to facilitate stable and consistent delivery of energy for all the homes and businesses in their service area.

Conversely, energy service companies exist to work with businesses, managing their energy budget while supplying energy at a cheaper rate. Among other related services, an ESCO exists to help businesses achieve profitability in their energy consumption.

While ESCOs do not maintain the power grid, they do in some cases own their own energy production and transmission assets and through supply and consultation, they give commercial clients the tools they need to use their energy more efficiently and cost-effectively.
